In 2002 the famous American automobile manufacturer Jeep introduced a new series of compact SUVs, called "Liberty". Jeep Liberty (also known as Jeep Cherokee KJ/KK) was designed to replace the Cherokee XJ. Until 2007 Liberty was the smallest 4-door SUV created by Jeep. The Liberty was manufactured in two generations.

The first generation (2002–2007) came with two new PowerTech engines and innovative rack and pinion steering. The first Liberty models were also available with an independent front suspension and either 2WD or 4WD. Jeep offered three trim levels of Liberty for this generation – the top end Limited, the Renegade with more rough appearance, and the base Sport.

The second generation was launched in 2008. It came with an entirely new design – with more boxy and off-road appearance. This final generation was equipped with iron-block, aluminum-head V6 engine and a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The second generation Jeep Liberty is also available with standard side airbags, electronic stability control with roll mitigation, traction control, and anti-lock brakes with brake assist. However, in 2012 Jeep Liberty was discontinued – the next generation returned the previous nameplate of Jeep Cherokee.
