What is a Magnaflow Exhaust?

A Magnaflow exhaust system collects the exhaust gases from the engine's cylinders and takes them away from the vehicle while reducing unwanted noise and toxic emissions. In other words, a Magnaflow exhaust system provides engine power and makes your car, truck or SUV run more fuel efficient while keeping the environment clean and sounding amazing...

HOW DOES A MAGNAFLOW SYSTEM FUNCTION EXACTLY?

The entire exhaust scavenging can be simply summarized in four stages:

STAGE 1:
As your engine burns the fuel/air mix in the combustion chamber, the gases are harnessed into the system through the exhaust manifold. Just like a funnel, the Magnaflow exhaust manifold takes the gases from the cylinders and guides them through an opening into the front pipe.

STAGE 2:
The catalytic converter takes the dirty air from the engine and flows the exhaust gases through a dense honeycomb structure covered with catalysts. The catalysts tackle the gases by reduction (a chemical reaction suppressing nitrogen oxide by turning it into nitrogen and oxygen gases) and oxidation (adding oxygen to transform carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide). An additional oxidation reaction turns any unburned hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water. The result is a 3-way catalytic conversion turning the dirty air from the engine into a lot of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and steam.

STAGE 3:
The filtered-out gases are then lead to the muffler which cancels the sound waves out, reducing exhaust noise and making your vehicle run quieter. Magnaflow exhaust mufflers use a special low-pressure construction inside which helps to scavenge even more gas from the cylinder. Some mufflers, such as the Magnaflow XL Mufflers, use a unique combination of large diameter perforated tubing and integrated sound baffles that effectively remove unwanted resonance and boost the engine's horsepower.

STAGE 4:
Finally, it is the tailpipe that carries the exhaust gases away from the entire exhaust system and the passengers. Magnaflow exhaust tailpipes are made from mandrel-bent stainless steel to reduce exhaust temperatures and increase horsepower, torque, and overall throttle response. Not only are these tailpipes long-lasting, but are also available in various diameters and configuration to fit any vehicle out there.

WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR FACTORY EXHAUST SYSTEM?

Having answered the question "what is a Magnaflow exhaust?" and gone through the main stages of operation of a standard Magnaflow exhaust system, it's time to get to the main question: "Why should you replace your stock system?"

Performance gains

Probably the main reason to upgrade from stock to Magnaflow is the performance gains throughout the entire system. Running a restricted-by-default exhaust system often means robbing your engine of its true potential. That's because a stock system cannot hold a candle to a superiorly engineered Magnaflow exhaust designed specifically to decrease backpressure and increase gas velocity.

For optimal exhaust scavenging translated into horsepower, torque, and throttle response, you need to have an exhaust system that guides the exhaust pulse out of the engine by creating a high-pressure area followed by a low-pressure area.

As the exhaust pulse is taken out of the engine more easily, the piston does not have to work as hard, which results in a more explosive combustion, faster exhaust velocity, and direct fuel economy. Add to all of that a performance muffler from Magnaflow and you get the perfect combination of power, gas mileage, and sound.

Corrosion

The main nemesis of a well-working stock exhaust system is rust. Even if you take short trips with your car, truck or SUV, you cannot avoid the effects of rust. That is because water vapor in the exhaust pipes condenses and forms a liquid when you turn the engine off.

For vehicles used only for short distance driving, stainless steel is the best option due to its higher resistance to corrosion. The other important factor to consider besides driving distance is the salt on the roads during the winter time. Salt increases the corrosive process, so you need to remove it from your exhaust system as soon as possible.

Unlike aluminum exhausts, stainless steel exhausts have a minimal percent of 10.5% of chromium content, which increases their resistance to corrosion. If you live in a dry area, aluminum exhausts will last a long time. However, if you're looking for durability and a one-time investment that will last significantly longer than an aluminum exhaust, then you should consider a stainless steel one.

Rusty muffler

In most cases, your vehicle's muffler will need to be replaced with the other components of the exhaust system. Most mufflers rust easily and need a lot of maintenance to avoid corrosion. Fortunately, they are not that expensive, even we are talking premium quality Magnaflow performance mufflers built to the highest standards. If you intend on having your muffler for a long period of time, then investing in a high-quality Magnaflow muffler that delivers a smooth, deep tone with no degradation over time is probably the best thing you can do.

Clogged catalytic converter

When a cat-converter becomes clogged, you'll have to replace it. Otherwise, your engine suffers from a loss of power, the converter glows red from overheating, and the heat builds up onto the floor of your car. Not something you want to experience...

All in all, the catalytic converter is one of the most important parts of an exhaust system. Not to mention that it is illegal to run without one in most states.

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR IN A MAGNAFLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM?

Most vehicle owners looking for a Magnaflow exhaust go for a bolt on the system designed to unleash more power and a great, satisfying sound. Nothing sounds the same as a Magnaflow exhaust at startup, idle, revving or on full-throttle acceleration.

We have a wide variety of Magnaflow products from mufflers, headers, delete pipes, and catalytic converters to complete exhaust systems made for sound and performance. American designed, developed and manufactured in the United States to the highest standards.
