Smittybilt was founded way back in 1956 by Basil "Smitty" Smith and was known back then as the small machine shop called Rock-ett. Smitty was one of the original and true-blue four-wheel drive enthusiasts who strove to provide the scene with 4WD equipment for trucks and SUVs. As Smitty continued his passion, he unknowingly piqued the interest of his son Tom, who proceeded to work under his father's tutelage with the now newly-named Smittybilt company. Tom did well to adapt the four-wheeled lifestyle and even went on to become the forefront innovator for the brand, developing prime designs like the original Nerf Bar side steps and tubular bumpers for the Jeep.
