CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO

The history of Chevrolet Monte Carlo began more than 40 years ago when Chevrolet presented a new line of personal luxury cars named after the city of Monte Carlo, Monaco. Through its long history, Chevrolet Monte Carlo has been manufactured in six generations.

The first generation (1970 – 1972) featured FR layout and 2-door hardtop coupe body style. The model was based on the A-body platform and came with 116 inches wheelbase. This generation was equipped with four types of transmission – 4-speed manual, 3-speed manual, 2-speed automatic and 3-speed automatic transmission. Four engine options were offered as well: 350 cu in (5.7 L) Turbo-Fire V8, 400 cu in (6.55 L) Turbo-Fire V8, 402 cu in (6.59 L) Turbo-Jet V8, and 454 cu in (7.44 L) Turbo-Jet V8 engine.

The second generation (1973 – 1977) came with a new design – the hardtop body style was replaced by a pillared coupe with rear side opera windows and frameless door glass. Ride and handling were significantly improved, thanks to some additional features, such as: radial-ply tires, Pliacell shock absorbers, and high-caster steering. This generation was provided with only two transmission types: 3-speed manual and 3-speed automatic transmission.

The third generation started in 1978. It was lighter than the previous generation. The wheelbase was also decreased to 108 inches. The fourth generation (1980 – 1988) was available with a smoother profile and new vertical taillights. This generation featured 4-speed automatic transmission and several engine options as well. In 1994, Chevrolet Monte Carlo has returned after 6 years of absence. This fifth generation used the W-body 1.5 Gen platform and came with a transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive layout. The wheelbase was slightly decreased again.

The sixth generation was launched in 2000. It utilized the GM W platform and featured 110.5 inches wheelbase. Unlike the previous generations, this final generation was classified as a full-sized coupe. Three engine options became available for the sixth generation: 3.4 L LA1 V6, 3.8 L L36 V6, and 3.8 L L67 SC V6 engine. In 2006, the Monte Carlo was upgraded with refreshed interior and additional features. However, Chevrolet discontinued the Monte Carlo series in 2007.
