GMC is a division of the legendary American automobile manufacturer General Motors (GM). Nowadays, GMC has leading positions in producing high grade pickup and commercial trucks, buses, vans, military vehicles and SUVs. One of the most awesome pickup trucks, offered by GMC, is the Sierra 3500 model. The Sierra line came to replace the long-running C/K line. Sierra is a series of full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucks manufactured by GMC. The history of Sierra includes three generations.

The first generation was introduced in 1999 and lasted until 2006. GMC Sierra 3500 appeared in this generation as a heavy-duty light truck, similar to the 1500HD and 2500HD. Sierra 3500 was built on the GM GMT880 platform and features 5-speed Allison 1000 transmission (6-speed for the 2006 – 2007 models). Two engine options were provided as well – 8.1 L Vortec 8100 V8 and 6.6 L Duramax V8 engine. In comparison with the 2500HD model, Sierra 3500 is available with a stronger suspension and "dually" twin wheels. The 3500 model also has 16,700 pounds (7,600 kg) towing capacity and is able to haul 5,511 pounds (2,500 kg).

The second generation (2007–2013) was built on the GMT902 platform and came with more engine and transmission options. The Sierra 3500HD from this generation features a new three-stage design. The single-wheel models have 7,050 lb rating, while the dual-wheel models have 9,375 lb rating. The third generation was launched in 2014. It utilizes the GMT K2XX platform and is provided with 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission. The latest model (2016) is available with an improved exterior – like new grille, headlights, front fascia and tail lights.
