Product Info
Reese 18K Elite Series 5th Wheel Hitch has 18,000 lbs. weight capacity with a pin weight capacity of 4500 lbs. Reese 18K Elite Series 5th Wheel has superior performance in cross winds and concentrates trailer load directly over the rear axle. It features an easy hookup and more tongue weight for better stability. This product is backed by a Lifetime Warranty.
Professionals who tow prefer 5th wheel hitches because their road manners are better than conventional-hitch trailers. The fifth wheel is also useful if you're traveling with a trailer on a daily basis. The fifth wheel is preferable if you're going to be doing expanded towing with a huge trailer, as opposed to taking it somewhere and leaving it for a while. With the connection between the trailer and truck centered over the rear axle, the trailer has far less propensity to steer the truck when you're driving over bad roads or driving on windy days, and this decreases driver tiredness. Trailer stability also depends on the proportion of the trailer's weight that sits on the tongue. Conventional-hitch trailers should have 10-15% of their weight on the hitch ball, but 5th wheel hitches should be carrying 20-25% of the load, which is considerably more.
If you want to use your truck to carry cargo in the bed when you're not towing, then choose a 5th wheel setup that is readily removable. This will allow unlimited use of the bed. A problem appears if you're towing with a short-bed pickup: you can't turn sharply without the trailer hitting the cab, especially when backing up to spot the trailer into a narrow lane. The solution is a 5th wheel that sits on rollers on a rail in the bed, sliding back a foot or so to permit sharper angles between the truck and trailer. Just slide the hitch forward over the axle for the best towing when you're on the road.
