In the last 24 hours, Automotive News has basically confirmed that the mythicalJeep Wrangler Pickup is not only considered for production - it is currently being developed and will actually debut in 2017 or 2018!
This is great news for all Jeep enthusiasts who have dreamed of a Wrangler pickup since they first laid their eyes on the Jeep Gladiator concept in 2005.
The news of the project was tied with the announcement that Wrangler production will remain in Toledo, Ohio.
No Jeep representatives will give an official confirmation on the project, however Sergio Marchionne’s comment to AN reveals a small part of the plan:
“We found a solution that accommodates a variety of other interests to us because of the way in which we can move some product around,” the CEO said. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know that the only way I can move around the Wrangler is to move it into the other Toledo plant.”
And if you’re having a hard time deciphering that quote, I’ll give you a hand.
Right now, Jeep’s plant in Toledo has 2 facilities: one produces the body-on-frame Wrangler, while the other assembles the unibody Jeep Cherokee.
And if the Cherokee production moves to a different facility out of Toledo, the current line could be retooled to assemble body-on-frame vehicles…
