When pressing the gas pedal for a fast acceleration, hydraulic pressure in the transmission needs to be elevated in order to match the increase in engine torque. This results in shifts getting delayed, becoming more firm, and downshifting. For the proper interpretation of engine load by your transmission, a governor and a throttle valve are utilized to control pressure while a vacuum modulator is used to specify engine load to the throttle valve. The ideal acceleration is established when the transmission is held in gear longer along with firmer shifts. Hydraulic pressure needs to be increased to suit the engine load and to prevent potential transmission damages.

The transmission pump provides fluid to the governor and throttle valve, which then moves the fluid to shift valves in the valve body. The governor is driven by the transmission output shaft and generates pressure with regards to vehicle speed. In hard acceleration and high engine loads, the throttle valve moves against the shift valve to elevate governor pressure, resulting in the shift delaying and higher pressure being bestowed to the transmission bands and clutches. Meanwhile, the engine load is motioned to the throttle valve through a vacuum modulator or throttle valve cable. The vacuum modulator utilizes an integrated shaft to attach to the throttle valve while a rubber hose is used to connect to an engine vacuum source. With the gas pedal pressed quickly and the engine under heavy load, the low vacuum moves the throttle valve so the transmission shifts later and firmer. The throttle valve cable generates the proper mechanical connection between the carburetor or fuel injection throttle body and the transmission throttle valve.
