How To Choose Royal Purple Motor Oil

Posted: February 1, 2016

Chances are, you’ve heard of Royal Purple.

The brand has been around for decades, and it’s well-known for its high quality performance lubricants.

Royal Purple products are trusted and used by engine builders, top racers and competitors in the NHRA, Sprint Car, kart racing and many other circuits.

If you’re shopping around for a motor oil product, choosing Royal Purple is an easy choice to make.

The hard part comes after. And that’s because the company’s product names are confusing to most: API, HPS, XPR, HMX, HPM are just some examples of the motor oils you can chose from.

So if it’s not that clear to you what each of those names stands for, don’t become frustrated.

We’re here to clear up the confusion.

The Hidden Meaning: API = API-certified

Application: Vehicles under warranty

Details: This synthetic motor oil is API-certified. And that means this product meets all automotive manufacture’s standards. Use this oil without any worry - it won’t affect your vehicle’s warranty. The oil is formulated with a unique combination of additives which work together for great wear protection. API motor oil will also prolong the life of your vehicle’s emission catalyst system.

The Hidden Meaning: HPS = High Performance Street

Application: High performance vehicles or vehicles with modified engines

Details: Royal Purple HPS motor oil is formulated for high performance street vehicles which need more protection than the standard API-certified oils can provide. This motor oil should be used on vehicles that are no longer under their manufacturer’s warranty. HPS motor oils are formulated with the brand’s proprietary Synerlec additive. This special additive activates to improve the condition of the surfaces on any metallic component and areas inside the engine. It’s how the oil reduces friction, even in the most powerful engine. This motor oil will also add viscosity to improve the seals between the cylinder walls and the piston rings. It’s strengthened with zinc and phosphorous to prevent engine wear.

The Hidden Meaning: XPR = eXtreme Performance Racing

Application: Multi-platform racing - NASCAR, NHRA, World of Outlawas, Bonneville.

Details: This motor oil is epically formulated to handle the extreme heat, wear, and tear that takes place inside the racing engine. Just like with HPS motor oils, XPR is formulated with Royal Purple’s proprietary Synerlec additive to improve the condition of the surfaces on any metallic component and areas inside the engine. But that’s not all. XPR oils feature additional performance additives to be able to handle the pressure on race day. It’s available in a variety of weights for specific motorsports applications and racing fuels.

Viscosities:

0W-10 — suitable for drag racing/ gasoline engines
5W-20 — designed to work with alcohol, methanol, and nitrous oxide
5W-30 — suitable for bracket racing, oval track racing, and others
10W-40 — perfect for marine, oval track, and endurance car racing in which long periods of extreme heat are experienced
20W-50 — formulated to withstand super long periods of extreme pressure and heat – designed for sprint cars, tractor pulling, and bracket racing

The Hidden Meaning: HPM = High Performance Marine

Application: Marine engines

Details: HPM motor oil is designed to work in a marine environment. It’s certified to meet the standard for marine engines with a catalyst (it’s NMMA FC-W Catalyst Compatible). This oil, again, features Royal Purple’s Synerlec additive, but what makes it special is its high film strength which allows it to deliver cooler engine operating temperatures.

Viscosities: 10W-30 and 10W-40
